BE AWARE - CYANOBACTERIAL HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOM SEASON IS HERE
7/10/2025
Sun and sand aren't the only things Wisconsinites may find during their trip to the beach...
With cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB) season in full swing, it's important to watch for blue-green algae blooms. When harmful algal blooms are present, the algal scum can be a variety of colors including fluorescent blue, green, white, red, or brown. Blooms can be more than one color and may look like thick paint floating on the water.
When in doubt, stay out! Humans can be exposed to harmful blooms through accidental ingestion while swimming, by inhaling spray during water recreation, or just by being in the water where a bloom is occuring. If you are unsure about the water, don't go in! Be sure to check for beach postings and water quality notices before swimming.
